The challenges facing the London insurance market as it begins its process of modernisation are well documented. In response to these issues DXC founded its Digital Minds programme to ensure that innovation remains high on the market’s agenda, participants are ready for change and have a safe space to be creative.
DXC Digital Minds was founded in 2017 by John Taylor and Caroline Bedford with the purpose of influencing change in the London market. As an educational programme it is committed to empowering those working in the insurance industry by breaking down barriers, questioning the status quo and working together to find solutions worth championing.
DXC Digital Minds is providing the current workforce with the skills and capabilities to prepare them for a future in an unpredictable landscape and to take roles as innovation and change champions, as well as the next generation of leaders for the London market.
With only 16 delegates at its inception, the DXC Digital Minds community has now grown to over 170 delegates representing more than 55 organisations across the market. DXC Digital Minds is a community of people who want to drive London market change for both today and the future.
Our delegates are truly diverse, representing the entire insurance value chain from insurers to brokers, underwriting to IT and operations. Job titles from the 2019 cohort include Junior Broker, Talent and Resourcing Manager, Assistant Underwriter, Head of Innovation, UX Designer and Claims Handler to name just a few.
Part of the value of DXC Digital Minds is that the programme is open to all organisations, all business areas and is inclusive no matter your background or level of experience.
Thank you to all of the companies who have participated in the DXC Digital Minds programme and a special thank you to ACORD for their continued support.
A diverse range of ages, roles, backgrounds and seniority, but this community has one thing in common: a shared goal to drive positive change within not just their own organisations, but within the London insurance market as a whole.
Change can be difficult. And changing something so specialist, with such deeply embedded tradition is an even bigger challenge. It needs expertise and care, but crucially, it needs to embrace the passion and protective nature of London market participants. At DXC, we wanted to create a platform for change, that embraces digital transformation while retaining what makes the London market special.
In some cases, delegates have told us they don’t often get a chance to interact with wider teams within their own organisations. Through DXC Digital Minds, they now have the opportunity to spend time with the entire value chain, understanding business requirements and challenges from the perspective of their peers and other market participants. Together, this combined experience and knowledge, enables them to influence change.
Topics including blockchain, AI, Machine Learning, Data Science, IoT and Sensor Technology are all ‘demystified’, and their application and impact on business, operations and culture are explored.
Due to the success of DXC Digital Minds, we are pleased to announce that for 2020, we will be able to run two cohorts!
Digital Minds kick off session 2019
Digital Minds kicked off the year with an introductory session for our delegates. The delegates started to brainstorm market challenges and share their ideas for a future London Market. During the kick off session goals were set for the rest of the year.
Dive into Digital
Erik Abrahamsson, CEO and Founder of Digital FinePrint, spoke about building a multi-award winning insurtech organisation, and using AI and data analytics to help the insurance community improve commercial insurance distribution.
Delegates got to grips with the Lean Canvas methodology and started building their change projects.
AXA XL Digital Leader, Hélène Stanway, spoke about her experience within the InsurWave initiative; using block-chain and IoT and how innovation has become such an important part of AXA XL's strategy.
One of the most crucial parts of achieving any change is understanding how to ‘reach’ those around you, and being clear on the impact you need to make.
Katherine Bryant, Founder of The Progress Partnership, shared her years of experience with the delegates whilst delivering hugely impactful workshops on how to prepare, position and pitch for the strongest chance of success. Delegates then had the opportunity to pitch their ideas and gather feedback to a panel of market experts.
Aviva's Digital Garage
As digital technology and customer expectations around digital interactions have become sophisticated, insurers are placing more importance on UX- the experience that a customer has when interacting with a product. Aviva's UX Designer and DXC Digital Minds delegate, Liv Thompson, shared her expertise on how user experience projects are tackled, and how Aviva places significance on making products useful, usable and enjoyable for their customers.
A visit to the Lloyd's Lab
A unique visit to the Lloyd's Lab to meet Cohort 2 and understand the purpose of the Lab and the benefit innovation and collaboration has on our industry.
The Lloyd’s Lab is a fast-track, fast-fail environment where new concepts, ideas and products can be tested with the support and active involvement of the world’s most specialist insurance marketplace.
Summer Showcase 2019
Hosted by an Aon and a keynote presentation from Richard Dudley, CEO, Aon Global Broking Centre on change and transformation. DXC Digital Minds delegates then presented their progress on their projects in the first half of the year in a bid to drive London Market change.
Change is not unique to insurance and so Caroline Bedford got the inside scoop from panel of senior executives who have seen – and driven – major change in the television and media industry. Panellists included:
• James Tatam, Vice President, Commercial & Digital Operations, Channel 5
• Susie Buckridge, CEO, YouView
• Katherine Wen, Group Director, Commercial Development, Sky
• Geoff Marsh, Editorial Director, Reach PLC
Autonomous Vehicles with AXA XL
A great session at AXA XL led by Adrian Copland. Autonomous vehicles (AV) are already among us in controlled environments such as airports, universities, farms and warehouses. AV can remove humans from hazardous environments and help reduce CO2 emissions by around 60%, making the world a safer place. The insurance industry is already prepared for this shift and insurers have launched insurance coverage specifically for clients involved in autonomous technology development.
Digital Minds Future of Work
Beth Cooper, Senior Advisory Partner at r10 Consulting, led a session describing the roles of the future, what that means for both individuals and their organisations and how to build a career within the insurance industry, regardless of your current role and how this might evolve over time. Beth helped the delegates to understand the change curve, the emotional impact of change, and helped them build a toolkit to provide practical steps to flourish in a digital future.
Robotic Process Automation and AI
Robotic process automation (RPA) enables organisations to automate routine tasks, streamline processes, increase productivity, and ultimately enable staff to focus on more complex, engaging activities. Delegates got to hear from the DXC team that uses RPA extensively to support Central Services and has over 60+ robots managing market tasks.
DXC Digital Minds with STEMettes Hackathon
Some of our delegates volunteered their weekend of the 19th and 20th October to support the STEMettes Hackathon event hosted at the DXC office. The event encouraged girls and young women to explore the opportunities in STEM subjects and how these skills are vital to build a more diverse workforce. The girls developed their unique ideas and transformed them into a functioning app in just two days, where they presented their concepts to a full audience.
Here's what people have to say about DXC Digital Minds
As a junior member of the industry, it is often frustrating to see inefficient processes used day in, day out without the power to initiate any change. DXC Digital Minds provided an invaluable platform that encouraged the discussion of this potential change within the London Market amongst peers at all stages of their careers. Since taking part in the programme, I no longer feel frustrated when I see how outdated the industry is, but instead see it as an exciting opportunity for drastic change. Not only do the Digital Minds events create open forums where many new ideas are initiated and discussed, but are also great networking opportunities.
My involvement as a delegate has given me great exposure both internally within Hiscox and also externally across the wider market. Myself and another delegate had the invaluable opportunity to organise our own Digital Minds event hosted by Hiscox. Taking part in Digital Minds has been a real highlight in my first year of working in the insurance industry.
2018 Hiscox Delegate
Becoming a DXC Digital Minds delegate has brought with it innumerable benefits and opportunities, however for me the most important, and perhaps unexpected value is the people that I’ve met through the programme.
Sessions run by people we would otherwise not come into contact with, or possibly even be aware of, who inspire us to challenge the status quo and to look at problem solving from a completely different angle.
The programme provides the opportunity to build a network of individuals of different ages, roles, and even industries who share a passion for progress and growth. With each session, we grow in not only knowledge, but confidence and skill. Without a doubt, my presenting skills have improved as a direct result of being pushed out of my comfort zone during the Digital Minds sessions, and supported by my fellow delegates.
It reinforces the idea that this is ultimately a collaborative market, and that by supporting and encouraging each other’s ideas and successes, we are stronger than the sum of our parts.
I am convinced that this group will continue to grow and develop, and bring real tangible change to the market as a talent collective. Watch this space!
Advisory Board Member 2019
Having had the privilege of being a part of Digital Minds over the last two years has been absolutely integral to my personal development and growth within the London market. If it was not for Digital Minds I quite possibly would no longer be in the market.
As an individual the programme has taught me a number of soft skills such as presenting, negotiating and influencing. Along with this I have built up a network of great individuals throughout the market which share the passion and energy I do regarding modernising the market.
My company has benefited from all the training I have gained through Digital Minds. I have been able to bring back ideas, techniques and solutions to problems as a result of our collaborative sessions.
The most powerful outcome of Digital Minds is the platform it creates for cross-market collaboration. I am now working with individuals from other companies within the market on initiatives that we truly believe will change the face of this market. Digital Minds has made this possible!
One of the takeaways for me is that the Digital Minds delegates are getting an ‘outside-in’ view of change. The insights they are getting help normalise change and take the fear out it; rather than being overwhelming, for them, change has become exciting and welcome
Delegate Sponsor, Aviva
Digital Minds continues to empower those working in the insurance industry to break down barriers, question the status quo and work together to find solutions worth championing. I am really impressed with the 2019 cohort in terms of the variety of experience and points of view, but all with an incredibly positive outlook for what can be achieved in the industry.
DXC Digital Minds Advisory Board Member 2019
The Digital Minds delegates are full of energy and ideas; as a collective, they have so much innovation power that the initiatives they bring forward will not only make a difference to the London Market, but potentially the industry as a whole.
Erik Abrahamson, Digital Fineprint, CEO and Founder
Digital Minds has enabled me to meet an extensive variety of like-minded yet diverse individuals and be involved in many inspiring events and discussions.
The programme has allowed me to share ideas and learn from individuals with whom I would not necessarily have crossed paths day-to-day. I have found this very rewarding and it is refreshing to gain new perspectives and a broader market insight.
The programme has confirmed for me that the insurance community is vibrant and forward-thinking. It is very fulfilling to witness, and hopefully play a part in, the evolution of the London market at this time.
Any programme that promotes diversity of thought is fantastic for our market. Programmes such as DXC Digital Minds encourage delegates to break with traditional thinking and look at new ways to tackle old, new and emerging issues in our market using technology as an enabler.
Clare Lebecq, Chief Executive, London Market Group (LMG
Being part of the DXC Digital Minds programme since its inception has been a highlight of my career and I can honestly say one of the main reasons I have remained in the industry. I still make sure to save time in my diary to attend Digital Minds events and this year I have been so impressed with the delegates and the tangible change that they have been influencing. Seeing the delegates collaborate to build applications and platforms that could revolutionise our industry, work together to make insurance an attractive career option for the next generation, conducting research that has the power to transform how we train and retain our talent and generally just challenging 'the way it's always been done'. What an incredible time to be part of the London Market!
